COB LED: Advantages and Disadvantages Analysis

Advantages of COB LED
COB LED (chip-on-board LED) technology is favored for its superior performance in many aspects. Here are some key advantages of COB LEDs:
• High brightness and energy efficiency: COB LED uses multiple diodes integrated to provide ample light while consuming less energy while producing more lumens.
• Compact design: Due to the limited light-emitting area, COB LED devices are compact, resulting in a significant increase in lumen output per square centimeter/inch.
• Simplified circuit design: COB LED activates multiple diode chips through a single circuit connection, reducing the number of required parts and simplifying performance implementation.
• Thermal advantages: Reducing the number of components and eliminating traditional LED chip architecture packaging helps reduce heat generation, lower the temperature range of the entire component, extend service life and improve reliability.
• Easy installation: COB LEDs are very simple to install in an external heat sink, which helps maintain a low temperature throughout the assembly.
• Improved clarity and efficiency: COB LED, due to its large area coverage capability, provides a larger focusing area, improving the clarity and efficiency of lighting.
• Anti-seismic performance: COB LED exhibits excellent anti-seismic performance, making it more stable and reliable in a variety of application scenarios.

Disadvantages of COB LEDs
Although COB LEDs have many advantages, they also have some limitations:
• Power Requirements: A carefully designed external power supply is required to provide stable current and voltage and prevent diode damage.
• Heat sink design: Heat sinks must be carefully designed to avoid damage to diodes due to overheating, especially when emitting highly focused light waves over a limited area.
• Low repairability: COB LED lamps have low repairability. If one diode in the COB is damaged, the entire COB LED usually needs to be replaced, while SMD LEDs can replace the damaged units individually.
• Limited color options: Color options for COB LEDs may be more limited compared to SMD LEDs.
• Higher cost: COB LEDs generally cost more than SMD LEDs.

Various uses of COB LEDs
COB LEDs have a wide range of applications, from residential to industrial uses, including but not limited to:
As a solid-state lighting (SSL) replacement for metal halide bulbs in street lights, high bay lights, downlights and high output track lights.
LED lighting fixtures for living rooms and halls due to their wide beam angle.
Spaces such as playgrounds, gardens or large stadiums that require high lumens at night.
Basic lighting for passageways and corridors, fluorescent replacement, LED lights, light strips, smartphone camera flashes, etc.
